My Precious Metal Story
In 1986, my Dad gave me a $50 face-value 1 oz. American Gold Eagle proof in the original government packaging. The fancy blue velvet case with the little clasp impressed this kid more than the actual PROOF COIN.
He told me to hang on to it. My Dad really emphasized the value of precious metals. As I type this, gold is now hovering at $4,100 per ounce… for a $50 face value coin!
As a numismatist, my Dad was an active coin collector. I didn’t comprehend his compassion until I inherited the collection. Over 3,000 coins! He meticulously cataloged everything. Some were in those blue coin books; he had over 30 years of proof sets, and a metal briefcase filled with those small coin envelopes. Each was written with the coin, year, mint mark, and condition.
As I got older, I gained a better appreciation for precious metals, especially as they interact with fiscal and economic conditions. I built a nice stack of gold in the late 90s and early 2000’s. The wild ride that the price, in USD, for gold and silver has been on over the past few years is fascinating.
Whether you are an active investor, already have a stack, or are just curious, my goal is to provide information and data that can help you. Please DO NOT take anything I say as financial advice. I am a humble and unabashed PM enthusiast
Buckle up and enjoy the ride. I suspect it is going to be a frenetic few years!
And, yes, I still have that 1986 American Eagle 1 oz gold coin. proof!
